I’m doing a conversion of the lovely Thunder Models Scammel (or Scammell, or Scamel, or Scamell. I’ve seen it all the ways) Pioneer R100 artillery tractor and making it into a Fallout inspired vehicle. The model is very detailed and has a good amount of photo-etch. I love photo-etch for the detail it adds.
This is a British WWII vehicle that had a lot of specialty configurations for various support roles. It had a towing version for pulling tanks out of ditches and the like, a flat bed with trailer version that would haul extremely heavy cargo like tanks, and the one I chose, a covered troop carrier that would tow an artillery piece.
In looking at examples of this machine, it had an amazing suspension that would allow it to move through terrain that most trucks couldn’t attempt.
The design and size of it really inspired me to translate this machine into the Fallout universe. I love Fallout 4, so that’s my reference point.
The first major change is the engine. I took the nicely detailed stock engine with the kit and started adding styrene to give it a look that was reminiscent of the Fallout fusion generators. The kind where you can grab fusion cores from. The way I see it, it makes sense to have smaller versions as the power source for heavy military vehicles. We never saw the engine of the troop carriers or other heavy machines, so why not?
I added a green SMD LED to the engine to give it the familiar glow where the fusion core stores. I’m also going to change the squared hood and some other shapes to be more rounded like the Fallout aesthetic.
My plan is to have the truck be converted to a mobile home base for a group of scavengers. Lots of bits and pieces of things hanging off the sides, and armor made from highway signs, etc. I’m thinking a crew of 6 would be good for this. It wouldn’t be spacious, but they could all make space inside to ride and sleep. It’s going to be fun figuring out how that’s all going to look.
