Battle of Hoth AT-ST – 6

And here we have the grand finale. The model has been modded, painted, assembled and weathered.

“But wait!” Someone may hypothetically shout in an over-dramatic fashion, “Wasn’t this supposed to be a Hoth diorama? Where is the snow you misrepresenting hack!”
Well, first of all, let’s not get personal. And next, that was the part to come after the main model was done.

This was my first attempt at any kind of terrain. There are a lot of things I’d do differently in the future, but since I still have that Snow Speeder to do, I’ll have that opportunity.
The base is a plastic disk I had already. The texturing is Bondo auto body filler. I tried using clay, but that shrunk when it dried and just broke apart. Bondo doesn’t shrink at all and is very robust. It’s easy to use and available in most any place with an automotive department.

The original Bandai base is embedded into the Bondo, so I can use the molded foot mounts.
I pressed some stones into the putty while it was soft, and tried to give a realistic layered look of sheets of ice stacked up.

Once everything had cured, then I painted it with a pure white and added some scenic snow material for train dioramas and the like. I coated it in a gloss coat given the real glare of ice and snow.

I didn’t want to go overboard with putting snow on the walker because it had only been on the planet surface about 20 or so minutes by this point, and most of the snow on it would have been splashed there from explosions. I mainly stuck to the feet and some on the legs where it would stick and not be melted right away from engine heat.
